Why it matters

Why beginners should journal from day one

The habits you build in your first months become your trading system. A journal makes those habits visible and correctable.

Start in two minutes

Create an account, log your first trade manually or import a CSV, and get structured analytics immediately.

What to track, built in

Entry, exit, size, P&L, tags and notes are ready for you. No need to design a spreadsheet structure first.

Learn from your own data

Weekly reports and core analytics show your win rate, profit factor and where losses cluster. The Free tier covers two accounts with manual entry, CSV import, tags, calendars, core analytics and weekly report export at $0. Pro at $25 per month adds unlimited accounts, auto-sync, AI insights and full export.

FAQ

Beginner questions, answered.

How do I start a trading journal?

Start a trading journal by recording every trade with its entry, exit, size, P&L and a note on why you took it, then review the record weekly. You do not need to design a spreadsheet first: a tool like Dusk Analyst structures it for you. Create a free account, log your first trade manually or import a CSV, and the journal computes win rate, profit factor and other analytics automatically. Review once a week, and you will start seeing which setups work and where mistakes repeat. The Free tier covers two accounts with manual entry, CSV import, tags, calendars, core analytics and weekly report export at $0. Pro at $25 per month adds unlimited accounts, auto-sync, AI insights and full export.

What should a beginner write in a trading journal?

A beginner should write down the setup, the entry and exit, the size, the P&L, and one honest sentence about why they took the trade and whether they followed their plan. Over time those notes reveal patterns: which setups produce results, where emotion affects execution, and which rules you break most often. Dusk Analyst gives you fields for all of it, plus tags, calendars and weekly reports, so the structure is ready from the first trade. The journal never sees your broker password or login credentials; only your closed trades and the account nickname leave the terminal. Dusk Analyst never asks for your broker password or investor password, and nothing logs into your account from our servers. Data is stored on Cloudflare, identity is handled by Auth0, billing by Stripe, and the AI that answers your insight questions runs on DeepSeek.

Is a free trading journal good enough for beginners?

Yes. For beginners, a free tier with manual entry, CSV import, tags, calendars, core analytics and weekly report export is more than enough to build the journaling habit. Dusk Analyst's Free plan covers two accounts at $0 with no card required and no time limit, so you can journal for months without spending anything. Upgrade to Pro at $25 per month only when you want auto-sync, AI insights and unlimited accounts. Dusk Analyst never asks for your broker password or investor password, and nothing logs into your account from our servers. Data is stored on Cloudflare, identity is handled by Auth0, billing by Stripe, and the AI that answers your insight questions runs on DeepSeek. No credit card is required for Free, there are no setup fees, and you can cancel in one click.

What is the best trading journal for beginners?

The best trading journal for beginners is simple enough to use after every trade and does the maths for you. Dusk Analyst is free for 2 accounts, takes manual entries or CSV imports, and calculates win rate, profit factor and P&L automatically. On MT4, MT5 or cTrader, Pro can auto-sync trades.

How many trades should a beginner journal before reviewing?

Review weekly, but treat 20 to 30 trades on one setup as the minimum before judging it. Fewer than that and a few lucky or unlucky trades can mislead you. Log every trade, including the ones you would rather forget, so the sample is honest.

Is Dusk Analyst really free?

Yes. The free tier costs $0 forever and includes two accounts, manual trade entry and CSV import - enough to journal a live account properly, with win rate, expectancy, drawdown and equity curve all calculated for you. There is no credit card required to start. Pro ($25/month flat) adds unlimited accounts, MT4/MT5/cTrader auto-sync, AI insights on your trading (1,000 trade-analyses a month), monthly reports and full export, and every new account gets Pro free for 5 trading days with no card. The pricing is deliberately simple: one plan, one price, no per-feature upsells.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, and it needs no card. Every new Dusk Analyst account gets Pro free for 5 trading days from sign-up: auto-sync from MT4, MT5 and cTrader, AI Insights with 1,000 credits, monthly reports and unlimited accounts. Add a card to keep it free for 10 more trading days; billing ($25/month) starts only after that, and you can cancel anytime from Billing in the app, with nothing charged.

Can I import my existing trade history?

Yes - CSV import is available on every plan, including free. If you've been tracking trades in a spreadsheet, broker export or another journal, export the CSV from wherever it lives and import it into Dusk Analyst; the journal matches it against your accounts and keeps your history continuous. Import is also the fallback for platforms that don't run MT4, MT5 or cTrader. For MT4/MT5/cTrader terminals, Pro auto-syncs going forward and the EA backfills any trades your terminal missed while it was off. Any platform that exports a CSV of your trade history works. Dusk Analyst recognises TradingView, Tradovate, cTrader, MT4 and MT5 exports on sight; for anything else you map your columns once and that parser is saved for next time. Comma, semicolon and tab files are all handled, day-first and month-first dates are detected from the file itself, and any row that cannot be read is listed for you rather than dropped quietly.

How many AI credits do I get with Dusk Analyst Pro?

Pro includes 1,000 AI trade-analyses every month. One credit covers one trade, so asking a question about a 40-trade week costs 40 credits and you can keep asking. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month and the counter sits in the top bar of the app, so you always know where you stand. Narrowing a question to one account or a shorter date range makes the same allowance go much further. Free accounts get a small number of AI credits to try AI Insights, alongside the full journal, analytics and weekly reports, and the free Pro week (5 trading days, no card) includes the full monthly allowance.
